The UHAPI Forum Highlights Programming Solution and Open Source Implementation at IFA

Technical Presentations and On-site Demo Show the UHAPI Enabling Faster A/V Software Development

IFA-BERLIN, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The Universal Home Application Programming Interface (UHAPI) Forum today introduced to Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) attendees its specification for reducing the software development cost and complexity of audio/video (A/V) technology.

The software effort in consumer electronics (CE) devices keeps growing rapidly, which results in increased development cost and increased lead times. The UHAPI eliminates the repetitive coding of standard, commonly used functions for Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB), Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) standard and Personal Video Recording to speed up product development. As a result, UHAPI allows the semiconductor and CE vendor to concentrate on differentiating features.

The need for UHAPI is apparent; industry support of the UHAPI is quickly growing with Forum membership doubling in less than eight months. Within the past year, the Forum released the UHAPI 1.0 specification defining the hardware-independent software interfaces necessary to configure and control video-related functions.

The growing popularity of UHAPI gave rise to an open source implementation of UHAPI on a personal computer. This project was launched in June on Sourceforge under the project name UHAPI4Linux. The UHAPI Forum welcomes this initiative as it further accelerates the adoption of UHAPI.

Presence at IFA

The UHAPI Forum will be exhibiting at IFA's Technisch-Wissenschaftliche Forum (TWF) in Hall/Stand Number 05.3/11.

IFA attendees can observe an in-booth, Linux-based demonstration by LogicaCMG that incorporates UHAPI4Linux. The demo clearly illustrates the use of UHAPI and cost-savings associated with a UHAPI implementation.

On September 5, UHAPI Forum members will deliver two presentations during IFA's TWF lecture series:

11:30AM - 12:00PM CEST
"Reducing the Cost of Software Development via UHAPI"
Speaker: Jeroen Brouwer, Philips Semiconductors

12:00PM - 12:30 PM CEST
"UHAPI Technology Overview"
Speaker: John Vugts, Philips Semiconductors

Continued Industry Support

The UHAPI Forum's analog and digital ATSC television specification is available online to all industry representatives, including non-members. The Forum will augment the current specification this year with hard disk drive (HDD) recording and DVB support. Further enabling adoption of the UHAPI, training on UHAPI implementation techniques is available through BORES Signal Processing. More information about the organization, the specification and training is available at www.uhapi.org.

About The UHAPI Forum

Founded in November 2004, the UHAPI Forum develops and maintains the Universal Home Application Programming Interface (UHAPI) for the home CE industry. The UHAPI serves as a hardware-independent bridge between the CE and middleware or application software industries and the semiconductor industry. The technology enables middleware and application software to be easily ported across multiple devices. Deployment of the UHAPI also frees software developers to focus solely on application development, which reduces development costs and speeds a product's time-to-market. Current UHAPI Forum members include ACCESS Co., Ltd., Atos Origin, BORES Signal Processing, the Digital TV Industry Alliance of China, HP, Mediabolic, NVIDIA, Pioneer, Royal Philips Electronics and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.
